With miles and miles of trails, plenty of ponds to paddle, and endless opportunities to create your own adventure, Saranac Lake is the place to be in any season. Especially if you have a sweet tooth.

Recently, three businesses opened up and they sure do make Saranac Lake that much sweeter. And savory-er (yes, that’s a real word). You haven’t heard the news? Let me proudly introduce you to Early Dawn Confections, Jamdots, and Anne's Crepes. Here’s everything you need to know…

Early Dawn Confections

If sweet stuff is the first thing you think of when you get up in the morning, Early Dawn Confections must be calling your name. Early Dawn Confections is open Thursday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., so there is plenty of time to get your fix of traditional breakfast pastries, savory puff pies, breads, and bagels. After years of providing baked goods at the local farmers market, owner Jill Zagrobelny opened up the storefront for Early Dawn on Woodruff Street and our taste buds have never been happier.

Pro tip: buy as many white chocolate raspberry scones as you think you need, and then get a few more. Same goes for the Dutch Knuckle Cheese Bagels.

Early Dawn Confections also takes special orders. If you need a birthday cake, wedding treats, or anything else, the team will make sure you get what you want and the dessert will be the highlight.

Jamdots

Everyone loves a good sweet and savory combo, and that’s exactly what Gemma Fielder and Nick Rich offer at Jamdots Baking Co. Gemma and Nick met while attending the New England Culinary Institute, and found a good match. In every kitchen, there’s an obvious element of love as an ingredient, and Jamdots is no different, especially because Gemma and Nick are engaged! From melt-in-your mouth cookies to the most delicious soups ever, Jamdots is the place to go.

Perhaps the best part about Jamdots is the cinnamon buns, which Gemma makes fresh every morning. Jamdots is open Wednesday - Saturday, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. My recommendation: grab a sammie and go spend some time outside and have a picnic! Or if the weather isn’t cooperating, a warm cup of soup will do the trick. There’s no bad choice!

Anne’s Crepes

If you find yourself in need of a crepe, Anne’s Crepes is a delicious choice. For those unfamiliar, crepes are similar to pancakes but they are thin, delicate, and begging to be topped with something scrumptious. Crepes are a delicacy in France, and a delicacy here in Saranac Lake, too! Owner Anne Sterling Alsina studied and lived in France, giving her crepes an authentic taste and feel.

Does any of this sound familiar? It might if you’ve been dining in Saranac Lake for the last 12 years. Sterling Alsina managed the Left Bank Cafe with Kenneth Weissberg and made thousands of crepes during that time. When retirement proved too “boring,” Sterling Alsina opened Anne’s Crepes a few doors down. Many people think crepes are just sweet (like breakfast desserts), but savory options are always on the menu. Open Monday - Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., it’s a perfect time to get a bite to eat during a mid-week vacation to Saranac Lake. Bon appetit!

(Bonus fact: a portion of gratuity is shared with the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.)

Tasty treats

Whether you’re a visitor or a local, you’ll want to visit these new businesses and get a snack (or two). Between the three options, there’s a place to eat every day of the week, so book your hotel room now and start planning your next trip. If you feel like you need to take a walk, visit a park, or stretch your legs with some window shopping between cupcakes, Saranac Lake has that too. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, the delicious food scene in Saranac Lake is heating up, and you don’t want to miss it!
